Withes of potter's clay

The technique used to make the baskets was exceptionally laborious and demanded particular skill and experience from the craftsman. Two flexible strips of potter's clay were interwoven by hand between "withes" extending radially from the base in a method imitating the making of wicker baskets. This gave the elaborate piece of ceramic art an air of naturalness. The Wedgwood company still produces fruit baskets using the same technique.
