The Restoration of 1994-95 In the winter of 1994-95, specialists from the Hermitage’s Laboratory for the Scientific Restoration of Clocks and Musical Mechanisms carried out a restoration of the clock. The craftsmen removed the inoperative electrical winding devices and devised and produced a system of pulleys that, with a weight-shaft reduced to 4.6 metres, permitted winding once every three days. New levers were created to link the clock mechanism to the bells. New weights for the clock were also produced. Simultaneously with the work on the movement, the dial of the clock was also renovated. The black coating of paint on the dial was restored, as was the gilding on the hands and markings. The bells were not changed. Since February 1995 the old bells of the Winter Palace clock have once again been ringing out the hours and the quarters above Palace Square. |
