The southern facade of the Winter Palace from Palace Square

The Winter Palace turns its magnificent southern facade to Palace Square. The complex rhythm of the two-tier colonnade, stressing the length of the building, is interrupted by the three arches of the central projection that provide access to the Large Grand Courtyard. This is the main entrance into the palace, decorated with wrought-iron gates bearing gilded double-headed eagles, imperial monograms and crowns. The palace tower clock is set beneath the peak of the pediment that takes the form of an imperial crown.
