On festive occasions and in busy everyday life the ringing of the Winter Palace clock is the same sort of St Petersburg institution as the noonday gun fired from the Peter and Paul Fortress. Every quarter of an hour above Palace Square the voice of the old clock of the imperial residence, approaching two hundred years in age, is heard. Today the maintenance of the old clock is the concern of specialists from the Hermitage. Three times a week someone climbs up and winds the clock by hand. Hidden from sight, the clock mechanism is in excellent condition and the tower clock always shows Petersburgers and visitors to the city the correct time.
