If we look into the history of clocks, we discover that the first timepieces in the 12th and 13th centuries were capable of giving audible signals by the striking of a bell. Such devices were needed in monasteries to tell the monks when it was time to pray and work. In the 14th century tower clocks appeared with a dial and a single hour hand. With the invention of pendulum clocks in the 17th century the accuracy of time measurement increased, which permitted the appearance of a minute hand on the dial. |
