On Palace Square

If we look into the history of clocks, we discover that the first timepieces in the 12th and 13th centuries were capable of giving audible signals by the striking of a bell. Such devices were needed in monasteries to tell the monks when it was time to pray and work. In the 14th century tower clocks appeared with a dial and a single hour hand. With the invention of pendulum clocks in the 17th century the accuracy of time measurement increased, which permitted the appearance of a minute hand on the dial.
