The art of Siam. 14th-19th centuries
Walking Buddha 15th century (?) Bronze, mother of pearl Height: 41 cm This statuette again demonstrates typical elements of Sukhothai art: the way of conveying movement and the clothing swept out to the sides by the brisk step; the softness and smoothness of the general modelling without a single sharp angle. Sadly it has lost both feet and the lower edge of the clothing, which diminishes the overall impression of ease of motion. Usually in this subject the left hand performs the vitarkamudra - the gesture of preaching or the abhayamudra - the gesture of soothing. According to Buddhist concepts, the energy that the Buddha radiated made his clothing transparent. That is why details of the lower antaravasaka can be seen through the outer uttarasanga.
