Buddhism and the life of the Buddha

Buddha Maravijaya

Lanna

Late 15th century

Bronze, mother of pearl

Height: 26 cm

This subject presents one of the iconographical types found in the art of the Far North. The Buddha sits in the vajrasana pose; the folded edge of the uttarasanga reaches only to the left nipple; the conical ushnisha terminates in a small sphere that symbolizes a stylized lotus bud or a precious stone. The source of this type is to be found in the Buddhist art of the Pala kingdom (8th-12th centuries) in eastern India. By the mid-16th century this type had practically been supplanted by the type that had become established under the influence of Sukhothai art.
