Buddhism and the life of the Buddha

Standing Buddha

Lanna

16th century

Bronze, remnants of gilding

Height: 64.5 cm

This standing figure shows quite well the distinctive way in which monastic dress is worn and its three components. The Buddha is dressed in the "open manner". The upper edge of the antaravasaka shows through the outer clothing at the waist, while on the shins we can see its lower hem emerging from beneath the uttarasanga, with relief indication of the band of lengthwise folds. The folded edge of the uttarasanga descends across the chest to the waist, and below the hip at the back. Above it the pleated samghati is indicated by engraving. The uttarasanga covers the left arm to the wrist. The pose of the standing Buddha with lowered arms is the only one in Siamese art that does not relate to some episode in his life and is not generally all that common.
