Buddhism and the life of the Buddha
16th-17th centuries (sculpture); 18th-19th centuries (pedestal) Bronze, wood (Artocarpus), red lacquer, gilding, mirror insets 23x6x8 cm (sculpture); 30x11x12 (pedestal) The last days before the Buddha's death became a subject in the art of all Buddhist countries. The Buddha lies on a couch that is shaped like an elongated lotus. Remarkably, no matter what the country, the reclining figure of the Buddha looks like a standing sculpture lying on its right side. He is dressed in the "open manner" and his clothing, defying the law of gravity, is presented in a way typical of a standing figure: the loose parts of the garments do not hang down, but "stay up" in a horizontal position.
