Buddhism and the life of the Buddha

Monk in meditation

Lanna (?)

18th-19th centuries

Bronze, remnants of gilding

Height: 34.8 cm

A depiction of the Buddha sitting in a pose of meditation can be distinguished from a monk in a similar pose only by the latter's lack of an ushnisha. The monk is sitting with his legs folded in the virasana position and his arms in the dhyanamudra gesture. The treatment of the hair is unusual: instead of relief curls, there are rows of tiny engraved circles. In all probability these were meant to imitate the monk's shaven head.
