Buddhism and the life of the Buddha

Seated disciple of the Buddha

Lanna (?)

17th century

Bronze, gilding, red lacquer

Height: 21.5 cm

The anjalimudra gesture indicates that this is no ordinary monk, but a disciple of the Buddha. He is sitting in the sukhasana pose, which is very rare for Siamese art. He is dressed in the "open manner", but there are here small details from the real life of monks that are not usually reflected in sculpture. The clothing on the chest, for example, is tightly bound by a narrow sash above the samghati. The sash is tied in a bow, a loop of which is slipped over the disciple's left arm, while the end descends from the left hand to the hip. Such a belt is not part of the monastic dress, but may be used to prevent slipping clothing becoming a distraction during meditation.
