Tetradrachm. Reverse: Zeus

Reign of Alexander the Great (336-323 B.C.)

Macedonia

Silver

Diameter - 26 mm; weight - 17.15 g

Coins often bore a depiction of Zeus as a god sitting in all his majesty on a throne. His right hand holds an eagle, while his left rests on a sceptre - the symbol of divine power, as we can see on this coin from the time of Alexander the Great. The stiff pose in which the god is shown tends to suggest that we are looking at a copy of one of the numerous statues of this deity.
