The spacious fifth room is earmarked for use as a cinema. A film
featuring Hermitage Director Mikhail Piotrovsky describes the age
of Catherine II and the history of the formation of the museum
collections. On display here are bricks bearing the marks of St. Petersburg brickworks that were used in the building of the Winter
Palace in 1754–62 and in the restoration after the fire of
1837. It is interesting to see a hook and a ring-shaped porcelain
insulator that were used to fix electrical wires. The Winter Palace
was electrified between November 1885 and January 1886, in a matter
of 60 days, in order that everything should be done for the Christmas
and New Year balls.
