Interiors of the New Hermitage. The Room of Modern Sculpture

1856

Luigi Premazzi

This hall was allocated in Klenze's plan to the display of modern European sculpture. The decoration of the barrel vault features relief depictions of famous sculptors: Michelangelo, Antonio Canova, Christian Daniel Rauch, Albert Thorvaldsen and Ivan Martos. The walls are faced with pale green artificial marble. The floor is laid with slabs of coloured marble.
The watercolour records the original display of European sculpture from the first half of the nineteenth century, mainly Italian and German works. In the centre of the hall are a Bacchante by Luigi Bienaime, Diana Resting after a Hunt by Emil Wolff and Cupid by Canova. On the left are A Nymph Stung by a Scorpion by Lorenzo Bartolini, Cupid and Psyche by Canova and Ganymede and the Eagle by Adamo Tadolini. On the right A Dancing Bacchante and Diana by Bienaime and Paris by Canova.
