18th- and 19th-Century Walking Sticks from the Hermitage Collection


Walking stick featuring a bust of a boy

1840s

Made by Teich

Belgium, Antwerp

Length 98 cm

This stick was made from palisander wood and has an opening for a cord. The ivory handle is in the form of a bust of a boy in a cape and a round hat. It was acquired from a turner named Teich in Antwerp.
Belonged to Prince Boris Yusupov.

Walking stick featuring a bust of Goethe

1840s

Germany, Mannheim

Length 97 cm

This walking stick made of Spanish reed is smooth and has an opening for a cord. The ivory handle is a miniature bust of the great German writer, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. A monument to the poet looking like this was unveiled in his native Frankfurt-am-Main on 22 October 1844, in the presence of Prince Boris Yusupov. This stick is mentioned in one of the documents from 1844 relating to the prince's trip abroad.
