18th- and 19th-Century Walking Sticks from the Hermitage Collection
Early 18th century Russia Length 90 cm The stick is made of hollow Spanish reed with a screw-on ivory handle. Inside is a wooden measuring stick of rectangular section one arshin (28 inches, 71.12 cm) long with a folding metal ruler at the end. The many functions of Peter the Great's walking sticks (spyglasses, measuring intsruments and tools) are a consequence of the Tsar's wide-ranging interests and his rational attitude towards even everyday items.
