Zwischengoldglas (gold foil sandwiched between glass)

A rare and expensive technique that dates back to Ancient Roman times. A sheet of gold foil, perhaps decorated with polychromatic enamel, is sandwiched between two layers of glass. This technique was also used in the decoration of the grand ducal "Banquet" services where the walls of the pieces were decorated with the monograms of their owners.
