This gold ring with portrait miniatures was created by
a German craftsman in the mid-18th century. The ring is decorated with
painted miniatures placed on discs of quartz that turn on a spindle. One
of them carries a portrait of Duke George Louis of Holstein-Gottorp, the
uncle of Peter III, in a wig wearing a green uniform with the ribbon of
the Order of St Anne around his neck. Set into the other is a portrait
of his wife, the Duchess of Holstein-Beck. The medallions are enclosed
by diamond-studded rims. Such memorial rings were very common in all countries
of Europe and were included in the private collections of many wealthy
nobles of the time as well as monarchs.
The ring was kept in the Winter Palace in the 18th century and in the Gallery of Jewellery from the mid-19th. |
