This superb necessaire mounted in gold was produced in
England in the 1760s. The Hermitage possesses a large collection of portable
and table-top necessaires which were very common in the 18th century.
The decoration of this piece in the form of a stylized pergola formed
of gold rocaille elements placed on a ground of semiprecious stone is
typical of English craftsmen in the Rococo era.
According to the inscription on a plaque inside the case - I congratulate the Most High Name-Day Celebrant, Our Gracious Little Mother Sovereign... - it was presented to Catherine II on her name-day. The necessaire was kept in the Winter Palace from the 18th century and in the Gallery of Jewellery from the mid-19th. |
