The gilt silver cup in the form of a reared horse on an
oval base was made by the famous Nuremberg master Jacob Frohlich in the
first quarter of the 16th century. Fun cups in the form of animals were
very popular in Germany in the 16th century. These cups could be given
as gifts for a birthday, baptism, betrothal, wedding or other important
occasions or used by German burghers as drinking vessels in their joyous
feasts. The horse's head that once served as a cover is now fastened to
the cup's body.
