This valuable cup (part of a double cup) is one of the
rare extant artifacts of the Dürer epoch executed in the nature style.
Nature motifs arose in the German art of goldsmithery in the early 15th
century but Dürer was the first to consciously use nature as the source
of forms and decorative motifs. The cup is raised on steam shaped like
the gnarled trunk of a tree, lobes, in the form of pear and pomegranate
fruit. The cup was probably made according to A. Dürer's design in 1517
by Ludwig Krug's shop.
