This elegant sewing box with a velvet cushion on the lid
was created by the Tula craftsman Rodion Leontyev in the second half of
the 18th century. The works of Tula's master smiths are not usually signed,
but this one bears the inscription "Tula - M[aster] Radion Leontyev".
The shape of the box is reminiscent of a rectangular sarcophagus with
four columns on the corners that stands on a broad rectangular base. One
of the chief elements in the decoration of the box are garlands of roses
made of gilded bronze set on a background of faceted "diamonds".
