Of great significance in the history of Tula's artistic products was the steel furniture that occupied a prominent place in the decoration of palace interiors. There is documentary evidence of items of furniture being presented, their being purchased by the court, and given as gifts to rulers. The heyday of this type of product came in the late 18th century, when the Tula factory turned out furniture in the Classical style that impressed contemporaries with its splendid proportions and delicate decoration. The great amount of labour and skill invested in each piece made it original and unique. This exquisite footrest with a cushioned top is a fine example of Tula's achievements in this field.
