The relief ornament adorning this piece was produced by a rare and laborious technique. Not the image itself, but the background was cut deeply away to leave the design standing proud of the surface. This is complemented by stippling - small dots applied to the background with a punch. Set off in that way, the ornament apparently gained extra volume, as the protruding designs were further chased. |
