The brush-holder (bitong) is carved from the section
of the bamboo stem and outside is decorated with the carved high relief
in different levels. Bamboo is a special plant for China and it symbolizes
virtue and strength of the perfect man and official, who always follows
the Confucian principles, who is wise and flexible as the stem of the
bamboo, which bends but never breaks. The carver could reveal the peculiarities
of the material as well as to tell us the literal and historic anecdote
about the famous official Se An who lived in the 4th c. B.C.
