Technique

Lacquer in China is the sap of the lacquer tree. The thin wooden core is covered with multiplied - sometimes up to 100-150 - layers of lacquer. Each layer was dried and polished. It took much time to create the base for the carving. Then the thick layer of lacquer was carved through with some designs. In this box the lacquer is of various colours. The upper layers are cinnabar red, the lower layers are of green, black and buff tones. The box is very beautiful and bright. The carving is fine and detailed, and is made in deep relief and in different levels.
