Satirical depictions of dwarfs were popular as far back
as the 17th century. The famous set of engravings by Jean Collot entitled
Gobbi and depicting all manner of dwarfs was published in 1622. It long
acted as a spur to the creative imagination of craftsmen who produced
figurines, humorous chess pieces and the like in ceramics, wood and ivory.
The bell depicts a female dwarf in a dress characteristic of the 18th
century holding a fan. The tongue of the bell is in the shape of a lady's
slipper.
