Strasser used bevel gears when creating the winding mechanism. Such gears have a slanted toothed edge and can therefore be connected at right-angles to change the direction of power transmission and reduce friction between the teeth. While the Mechanical Orchestra is being wound up, a ratchet mechanism prevents the winding drum from interacting with the sound-producing mechanism. After the weights have been raised on one side, the handle has to be moved on the winding mechanism to raise the weights on the other side. It is not possible to raise all the weights at once due to their considerable combined mass. | ||||||||||||||||||||||
