This wine goblet in the form of a small expressive figurine
of an owl was made by an anonymous Moscow craftsman in the mid-18th century.
Such goblets were used at private dinner parties to which only close friends
were invited. Silver figurines of animals were to impress and amaze the
guests by their unique form and meticulous technique of execution. Goblets
featuring animals originated in Germany in the 16th century and soon gained
great popularity.
