This paper-weight in the form of a horse was produced
in 1864 by craftsmen working for one of the best-known businesses producing
silver articles in Russia - Ignaty Sazikov's factory. After its resounding
success at the World Exhibition in London in 1851, the factory's products
were in great demand across Europe. Sazikov enlisted the services of the
most prominent Russian sculptors. This article was probably created ''from
life'' to the commission of some horse-breeder in memory of a champion
trotter that had repeatedly won at the races. The sculptor who produced
the model managed to convey both the tension of a free-spirited animal
forced to pose and the slight trembling of its muscles.
