The Treasure of the Golden Horde

Saddle cover

First half - mid-13th century

Great Mongol State

Chased, engraved and gilded silver

This is one of a pair of saddle covers that, judging by the golden drinking vessel found in association with it, belonged to a Mongol noyan who died in the steppes north of the Black Sea not far from the Crimean peninsula. The cover for the front saddle-bow bears a depiction of grazing horses on a background of typical floral patterns; the cover of the rear saddle-bow has hares against a background of lotus buds. These covers may have belonged to a saddle used not for war but more for show, for hunting or when participating in the festivals of the calendar.
The artefacts were found in 1845 as a result of illicit excavations at a destroyed burial site by the village of Terpeniye, Melitopol district, Taurida (Crimea) province.
