Restoration of Jacob Ruisdael's painting The Herd at the Watering Place
This landscape by the celebrated 17th-century artist Jacob Ruisdael is a vivid example of using the artistic devices typical of Dutch art at that period. The work came into the Laboratory for Restoration of Easel Paintings in 2005. It was covered by a thick, strongly yellowed, uneven layer of late varnishes of various dates with compacted grime between the layers that considerably distorted the qualities of its colour scheme.

Late in 2006 the Laboratory for Scientific Restoration of Graphic Works completed the major task of restoring nine panoramic views by the artist Pavel Piasetsky belonging to the cycle "The Great Siberian Route. The Transsiberian Railway (1894-1899)" from the collection of the State Hermitage.

Restoration of a large-format 11th-century mural from Tuyuk-Mazar, Eastern Turkistan
In 2006 the Laboratory for Scientific Restoration of Monumental Painting completed the large and complex task of restoring a ceiling painting from the cave temple of Tuyuk-Mazar. The mural was brought by the First Turkistan Expedition (1909-10) that was led by Academician Sergei Oldenburg.

Restoration of the writing-set of William III of Orange, stadholder of the Netherlands
In 2006 in preparation for the exhibition in Amsterdam entitled "The Silver Wonder of the East. The Silver Filigree of the Russian Tsars" the Laboratory for Scientific Restoration of Precious Metals (headed by Igor Malkiyel) restored a writing-set that had belonged to William III of Orange, stadholder of the Netherlands.

In 2006 the Ceramics Restoration Section of the Laboratory for Scientific Restoration of Works of Applied Art carried out a complex and exceptional project - the restoration of a porcelain coat-of-arms of the Russian Empire that was intended for display in the exhibition "Diplomatic Gifts and the Language of Peace" held in the Konstantinovsky Palace in Strelna.

Restoration of a "wickerwork" basket from the Green Frog Service
In 2006, as part of the project "Restoration of Western European Porcelain", the Ceramics Restoration Section of the Laboratory for Scientific Restoration of Works of Applied Art restored an oval "wickerwork" basket from the celebrated Green Frog Service that was created in 1773-74 by Josiah Wedgwood's factory in England to a commission from Catherine II.

Restoration of glass plaques bearing training drawings made by the children of Emperor Paul I (late 18th - early 19th century)
The stocks of the Department of the History of Russian Culture in the State Hermitage include a small collection of 21 drawings made in a unique mixed technique - graphite pencil on matted milk glass. A study of the collection by Irina Bagdasarova, the curator of the department, revealed on eleven of the pieces signatures belonging to daughters of Emperor Paul I. Over the course of 2006 the Laboratory for Scientific Restoration of Works of Applied Art carried out a restoration of these items.

Restoration of a clock with a figure of Venus
The restoration of a clock with a figure of Venus in the Laboratory for Scientific Restoration of Clocks and Musical Mechanisms required a relatively small amount of work. It did, however, provide a good illustration of a many-sided approach to the task with the goal of returning an exhibit to its original appearance with the mandatory retention of all details.

Restoration of a rock-crystal chandelier
This unique chandelier made of natural rock crystal is unparalleled either in the State Hermitage or in Russia generally. Sadly, when it came in 2006 for restoration the exhibit had suffered serious losses of metal and crystal as well as it had been assembled in an arbitrary fashion at some time.
