Restoration of an icon of The Archangel Michael with Selected Saints

In 2006 the Laboratory for Scientific Restoration of Tempera Painting (headed by Igor Permiakov) completed restoration of an icon of The Archangel Michael with Selected Saints.When the icon entered the laboratory the image was hard to make out beneath the darkened varnish and the work was not suitable for display. After reinforcement of the paint layer and primer the darkened film of varnish was smoothed, places where the paint layer and primer had been lost were made good and painted in with watercolour.
