Examination and restoration of Domenico Panetti's Portrait of a Woman (Ferrara school), 16th century

In 2006 the Laboratory for Scientific Restoration of Tempera Painting completed restoration of a painting by the Italian artist Domenico Panetti Portrait of a Woman (Ferrara school), 16th century.
The examination of Domenico Panetti's Portrait of a Woman fully confirmed that this work of the Ferrara school can be dated to the 16th century. The study detected white underpainting, a microspectral analysis of which revealed the presence of a small amount of copper - something typical for 16th-century Italian art - and traces of tin. X-rays revealed the artist's own reworking of the line of the lower lip. The work came into the Laboratory for Scientific Restoration of Tempera Paintings with numerous minor losses of the paint layer and primer. The primer was reinforced, the losses made good and the yellowed film of varnish reduced in thickness. The work was touched up using natural pigments.
