Restoration of a "wickerwork" basket from the Green Frog Service Restoration artist Tatyana Shlykova In 2006, as part of the project "Restoration of Western European Porcelain", the Ceramics Restoration Section of the Laboratory for Scientific Restoration of Works of Applied Art restored an oval "wickerwork" basket from the celebrated Green Frog Service that was created in 1773-74 by Josiah Wedgwood's factory in England to a commission from Catherine II. The service was delivered to Russia in 1774 and from 1777 it was kept in the Kekerikeksenen Palace (renamed the Chesme Palace in 1780). In 1830 the service was moved to the English Palace at Peterhof, then in 1912 it was transferred to the Imperial Hermitage. The "wickerwork" basket arrived for restoration in pieces. Its glazed surface was grimy and it had suffered some losses. Traces of glue visible at crack sites indicated that the basket had already been restored on some prior occasion. In order to return this exquisite work to a display-worthy condition a number of measures were carried out: the surface was cleaned of grime; the old glue was removed; the losses were made good and tinted. While the amount of work involved was not large, it was difficult due to the need for extreme precision in both gluing and making good and touching-up losses. |
