Restoration of glass plaques bearing training drawings made by the children of Emperor Paul I (late 18th - early 19th century) Restoration artists: Yekaterina Dutova, Yelena Krylova and Vadim Lebedev The stocks of the Department of the History of Russian Culture in the State Hermitage include a small collection of 21 drawings made in a unique mixed technique - graphite pencil on matted milk glass. A study of the collection by Irina Bagdasarova, the curator of the department, revealed on eleven of the pieces signatures belonging to daughters of Emperor Paul I. Over the course of 2006 the Laboratory for Scientific Restoration of Works of Applied Art carried out a restoration of these items. The work was performed in several stages: preparation included determining the exact material and developing a special method for cleaning and gluing together the broken plaques. The analyses were carried out by Sergei Khavrin, a researcher from the State Hermitage's Department for Scientific and Technical Examination (headed by Alexander Kosolapov). Then, using a method approved by the restoration commission, the plaques were cleaned without using liquids to remove surface grime. A rectangular plaque bearing a depiction of Mercury and Paris, and another plaque bearing an allegorical depiction of Painting, both the work of the grand princesses, were put on display at the 5th Restoration Triennale that was held in Moscow in December 2006. |
