Restoration of a rock-crystal chandelier

Restorer: Valentin Molotkov

This unique chandelier made of natural rock crystal is unparalleled either in the State Hermitage or in Russia generally. Sadly, when it came in 2006 for restoration the exhibit had suffered serious losses of metal and crystal as well as it had been assembled in an arbitrary fashion at some time.

To recreate the original appearance of the chandelier a careful analysis was made of the markings on the surviving pieces and a large volume of information on similar chandeliers abroad was processed. The major research work made it possible to select replacements for the missing drops, to restore the metal elements of the frame and make good the losses, and to assemble the chandelier. Nine brackets were restored; 125 rock-crystal elements were selected from the stocks and missing connecting parts were recreated.
