Restoration and Reconstruction of the Eastern Wing of the Former General Staff Building.
July 2010

General construction and restoration works of the first priority of the restoration and reconstruction project of the Eastern wing of the General Staff Building have come into their closing stage.

The grand staircase-amphitheater, leading to the Large Enfilade of Atriums has gained its complete architectural look. Soon works of great complexity on arrangement of enormous translucent cover (the width of span of the construction reaches 40 m) will be finished. Specialists face a very complicated engineer task - development of the complex of movable platform - "carts", providing access of the personnel for the glass roof servicing. Specialized equipment for the display area transformation will operate in the space of the Large Enfilade rooms.

In a modern museum specific requirements are set to development of comfortable climatic conditions for both exhibit items and visitors. The most modern system of conditioning and air preparation, providing micro-climate in the exposition halls, is provided in the General Staff Building. Laying of external and internal communications is held, the equipment is being installed.

Modern things in the reconstructed building are combined with carefully preserved architectural heritage. Placing of the historic stone tiles, taken away for the time of repair works is carried out on the stairs of inside stair-cases and corridors. When executing restoration the Group of Companies Intarsia paid special attention to the preserved elements of the interior's decoration. Wherever possible, conservation of the painting fragments was made. The lost painting fragments were reconstructed. The original look was given back to the paintings of the Empire epoch. Molding decoration was restored. Glazed tile stoves and mantel pieces, which there are about several dozens in the building, were fully reconstructed and restored.
