A reproduction of the Hermitage sculpture of Aphrodite. In the middle of the 4th century BC the Greek sculptor Praxiteles depicted Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty, in the nude for the first time. His Aphrodite, a personification of perfect female beauty, became a standard for artists of many generations in Greece and Rome. Our Aphrodite is based on a Roman copy of the original Greek statue of which only the torso has survived. It has been skillfully crafted by experienced workmen of the Hermitage workshops.
