This is a contemporary adaptation from a Roman marble copy of the original executed around 420 BC by Alcamenes, a younger contemporary of Phidias. In the 18th century, the Hermitage head was believed to portray Achilles. This identification was proposed by the famous painter Anton Raphael Mengs. At present the Hermitage head is regarded as a copy of the Louvre's Ares of Borghese. It has been skillfully crafted by experienced workmen of the Hermitage workshops.
