A poster of Danae by Rembrandt Harmensz Van Rijn from the Hermitage collection. The original (1636, Holland; oil on canvas, 72 3/4 x 79 3/4 in.) came to the Hermitage in 1772 from the collection of Antoine Crozat, baron de Thiers. Danae's features are far from perfect, but Rembrandt's image of a woman waiting for her sweetheart is strikingly truthful. A close-up view of a nude female figure in such an open manner was quite alien to Dutch painters of the 17th century. 24 x 16 1/2 in. (60 x 42 cm). |
