The original (1490-91, Italy; tempera on canvas, 16 1/2 x 12 7/8 in.) came to the Hermitage in 1865 from the collection of Count Antonio Litta in Milan. This picture is among the works that marked a new era in the arts of the Renaissance known as the High Renaissance style.
