Orthodox crosses are not only symbols of the ecclesiastical mystery of the Crucifixion; they also fulfill a special allegorically sacral role. This cross is decorated with small images of the five miracle-working icons of Our Lady which are greatly venerated as holy in Russia: the icons of Vladimir, Tikhvin, St Feodor, Smolensk and Kazan. The cross of Our Lady symbolizes the special protection and intercession which the Virgin Mary traditionally has provided in Russia.
