The shape of the reliquary cross was brought to Russia from Byzantium in the 11th century. These items were intended to preserve some small part of saintly remains or other holy things. In order to strengthen the spiritual significance of the cross, in the 12th century one of the sacral images - that of the Holy Savior - was placed inside. It is believed that this image first appeared on the kerchief with which St Veronica wiped Christ's face on the road to Golgotha. The reliquary cross is formed from five circles which are the symbols of heaven and eternity. Crosses like this were kept in Russian Orthodox monasteries and households, where they were venerated as holy objects. Two-sided cross; openable. Silver, gilding; casting, chasing, engraving. Length 1 5/8 in. (4.2 cm), width 7/8 in. (2.3 cm). Weight 16.6 grams. |
