The State Hermitage Volunteer Programme began in May 2003 to help the museum’s various
departments in celebrating the anniversary of St. Petersburg.
During this time, cooperation between the volunteers and the museum’s departments has been
established, identifying priority areas of activity and beyond. As a result of being directly connected
with the inner workings of the museum, the programme provides practical training for students of both
Russian and foreign universities.
Since its inception, the programme has grown into a team of people dedicated to their work;
among which are representatives of different nationalities, ages and professions. Currently, volunteers
from Russia, Switzerland, USA, Germany, France, Spain, Italy and many other countries help the
Hermitage. They are comprised of linguists, art historians, journalists, teachers, managers. The
cooperation of professionals allows the Hermitage to develop very interesting projects. It is
encouraging that even after their departure from Russia, volunteers strive to maintain a relationship
with the museum. As a result, today the programme’s volunteers form of a wide network of international
contacts.
