A new issue in the 'Gallery of Prints and Drawings' series, this book delves into how the Hermitage was represented throughout its first one hundred years. It features prints and miniatures reproducing the Hermitage canvases, as well as architectural drawings and perspectives of the rooms, which all portray the museum as seen or envisioned by its creators, keepers and visitors. The most famous of them—watercolours showing the New Hermitage by Eduard Hau, Luigi Premazzi and Konstantin Ukhtomsky—trace the transformation of the private collection kept by the Russian royal family in the most secluded area of the palace complex into a public museum. The book also takes a look at how paintings from the Hermitage gallery were depicted in prints and miniatures, as well as focusing on the stories behind the first illustrated catalogues. A number of engraved plates, miniature replicas of the paintings and some of the works on paper are presented here for the first time.
