What's on at the Hermitage

"The Fiery Stronghold". Marking the 150th Anniversary of the Birth of Nicholas Roerich

The core of this exhibition is made up of the artistic works of Nicholas Roerich: paintings and graphic art, including some rarely exhibited pieces.

The display will also contain examples of Russian icon-painting, works of Oriental art (a Buddhist tangka and sculpture), archaeological artefacts, manuscripts and documents connected with the artist’s life and oeuvre.
One of the main tasks of the exhibition is to present Roerich’s legacy in conjunction with the leitmotif of his creative work – the idea of respect and protection for the values of knowledge and culture. The exhibition project is being prepared by the State Hermitage in conjunction with the Saint Petersburg State Museum-Institute of the Roerich Family and the State Museum of Oriental Art. The participants include museums in Russia, Mongolia, Azerbaijan, India and the USA.
