This piece is a part of a whole series of works painted by the artist on the theme of the "seaport. " In Lorrain's album, Liber Veritatis, which consists of sketches of previous paintings, which served as an anthology of examples for clients, this version corresponds to a drawing that was most likely made in 1634. It was that drawing that served as the basis for the date suggested for this painting. The "sea ports” from the mid 1630's are usually small in size, with genre scenes in the foreground, and images of architectural structures and ships in the background. In this composition, the ancient arch of Titus rises on the right side, with a large round tower near it, and, enveloped in a light mist, two other towers are visible in the distance near the harbor entrance. The play of light on the carved decorations of the arch creates a famous romantic effect.
