Rustic Ware Platter: Dish with Animal and Plant Ornaments

France, second half of 16th century

The dishes produced by Bernard Palissy’s workshop recreated a little living world. A large snake undulates across the full length of the first example, occupying not only the island in the middle, but parts of the lip of the dish as well. The island is surrounded by streams of water executed in relief with a large sturgeon and a bream swimming in them along with two crayfish, one of which is crawling out onto the lip. Leaves, shells and other creatures complete the ensemble.
