Brazier with Handle

Iran, second half of the 16th century

This brazier is made from eight rectangular metal plates connected by tall legs. Each of the plates has a projection on the inside with a socket used to attach the base. The decoration of each of the plates is identical: above and below there is a row of openwork palmettes; in the centre a large quatrefoil medallion containing a depiction of a predator attacking a deer; to the left and right half-medallions containing images of hares and flowers. The brazier had two handles, the ends of which were shaped like dragons’ heads (only the lugs now remain of the second).
